Action

Disposal to Recycle

We made our original recycled paper with our own diaries that are to be disposed.
As a maker releasing diaries every year, how should we take the responsibility?

In this point of view, we tried and succeeded in making our original 100% recycled paper called HIGHTIDE Recycled Paper. Our first step was using it for the covers of some of our 2023 diaries.

Our Policy

We must take action, because we have made and wish to keep making diaries every year.

We launch the range twice a year, and we try not to make unnecessary stock as much as possible.
However, diaries have 'expiring date' because they have year and date on them that makes its sales period limited. Unfortunately, the fate of the unsold diaries was to be disposed.

This is how we came to start our challenge of making our own recycled paper.
Though it is just a small part of our whole range yet, we will keep facing every single step and going from where we can.

※The covers of [24NF1] and [24NQ1] are made of HIGHTIDE Recycled Paper

From Where We Make

We show below how we make HIGHTIDE Recycled Paper

  • 1

    Collection of unsold diaries.
As the preparation for the production, the covers are taken off at DONMAI Co., Ltd.

  • 2

To stabilize the qualiry, we set the proportion at 50% each between pulp made from our old diaries and the other regenerated pulp. The latter one is from Daiwashiryo Co., Ltd. in Osaka.

  • 3

During de-inking, black ink bubbles are coming out from liquefied material that are mixture of confidential documents and used paper. White pulp is ready through this process.

  • 4

For our made-to-order paper, we work with Sanyo Paper Co., Ltd. In Osaka. Old diaries without covers are thrown into the huge machine called pulper for liquefaction with water at once.

  • 5

At the bottom of pulper, you can find bookmarkers that were not able to liquefied and are taken off by hand. Daiwashiryo's regenerated pulp is also liquefied in the same way.

  • 6

Finally mixing up the two materials at 1:1, 300kg each for the first lot.

  • 7

Washing and concentrating the mixture in thickner.

  • 8

Extracting water by the heat of vapor, making the shape of paper at the same time.

  • 9

Sheet of HIGHTIDE Recycled Paper are coming into a huge roll.

  • 10

Leave in order to stabilize the quality.

  • 11

    The last step is cutting.

  • 12

Paper making uses massive amount of water. Sanyo Paper uses groundwater, and wastewater is proceeded within the factory. The water becomes clean so it is released in the river, and it won't undermine the ecosystem there.
